In 2014, I created a two-hour video course on clear writing for curious.com. It began with deep research on writing and corporate educations—including books by E.B. White, Rudolf Flesch, William Zinsser, and Donal Kirpatrick. Based off that research, I created learning objectives a course outline. I then learned to use Camtasia and Audacity and set up a home recording studio. Next, I wrote the video scripts and assessment materials. Finally, I recorded and published the course. It includes associated digital quizzes and print worksheets.
Stuart Mill English was my company name.
The videos explore topics like brevity, style, and tone. They come with useful examples.
I taught myself to use Camtasia to produce the videos. (Sometimes I got frustrated.) I also used Audacity and Gimp for audio and photo editing.
I created this rubric for the course. It’s a nice summation of everything.
My tone guide helps people understand (1) what tone is and (2) how to create a desired tone.
In total, there are 72 worksheets like this.
Years later, I’m still getting comments and the videos are still helping people.
